Nancy and Kent Smith purchased their 2.5 property in 1989. In 1993 they acquired their first animal, a three-legged leopard named Moondance, as a rescue. The very next year they heard about four wolf pups in need of placement and brought them home. In 1999, two important volunteers became involved with Shy Wolf Sanctuary, Michael Kloman and Deanna Deppen. These volunteers invested countless hours in building the sanctuary from 5 big cats and 11 wolves and wolfdogs to the current number of over 30 wolves and wolfdogs. Today, over 30 volunteers support the organization actively.
Our mission is to “reconnect people and animals through education.” Shy Wolf Sanctuary, Education and Experience Center provides sanctuary and rehabilitation to wild and captive bred wolves, and other exotic animals. We work year round to educate the public about the importance of protecting these animals.
Shy Wolf Sanctuary provides a permanent home to over 60 captive-bred or rescued exotic animals every year. The wolves and other resident animals are housed on a 2.5 acre property in Naples, FL and are supported by over 30 active volunteers. Wolfdogs are generally considered unadoptable by domestic animal services and have nowhere else to go. Shy Wolf Sanctuary is literally their last hope.
Every year Shy Wolf rescues between 20 – 100 wolfdogs in Florida and across the country that never come to reside at the sanctuary. Shy Wolf places these animals in foster homes for eventual adoption and works with a network of trusted organizations and rescuers.
Shy Wolf is currently located in Nancy and Kent’s backyard…literally! We are on 2.5 acres, of which about 1.5 is available for our use. No one who visits would ever imagine what we’ve been able to accomplish in such a small space!
Since 1998, Kent and Michael have built 15 new enclosures with the largest encompassing 2,400 square feet. We have used up every inch of space available and want to build a much larger facility benefiting our residents and guests alike. It will incorporate all of the best aspects of our current location while improving on habitats and features thanks to all we’ve learned in this journey.
To help sustain our cause and care for the animals, our goal is to move to a new facility with more than enough acreage for our animals. For more information on our move and how YOU can help the cause, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or donate today!
I cannot thank you enough for the interesting, informative, and special tour through the Sanctuary !! We had a wonderful time meeting the folks doing the tour and all the four-legged furry residents !! I will be telling all my friends and family what a fantastic place The Shy Wolf Sanctuary is to visit !! I can't wait to head back there!
Very unique, informative, awesome and humbling experience. These are incredible animals that you can spend hours just observing but to get that close and personal with them is just something almost indescribable. Feel blessed for the opportunity and thank all of you and your volunteers for the beautiful and memorable experience. We will pass the experience on to others and will be sure to bring visitors to florida with us next time we come.
Was a great tour. We loved the hands on aspect. Better than any zoo we have ever visited. Our tour guide was very informative. Staff was very friendly. We enjoyed the animals immensely. We are definitely planning another tour and will recommend shy wolf to many others. Thank you for an amazing experience and for your endless dedication in preserving these beautiful creatures!
Really enjoyed your tour. In this world of cruelty and complete selfishness, it did my heart good to see what you do for those animals. You must feel their love and appreciation every day. They ask nothing from you but love and attention. You will have a place in animal heaven for sure and that is where I want to be. Keep up the good work, you are to be admired.
Thank you for providing a wonderful interactive experience with your beautiful animals. You do great work, both in caring for your amazing creatures and educating the public about their true nature and gentle spirit. The stories of the horrors some of your animals have survived, and the amazing resilience they have exhibited when treated with patience and loving care, are truly an inspiration.
Thank you so much for the fun experience!!! These animals are truly well taken care of!!

This was a marvelous experience for myself and my daughter. We have wonderful pictures! We will write to the Bonita Springs council and recommend the move to Bonita - what an attraction for tourism, what a wonderful thing to do for the animals.
Excellent and informative. Will return again and bring others.
It was a wonderful day spent there with the beautiful animals! Loved the whole experience. The flute playing at the end was amazing and I loved how they all sang along with him!! Truly an amazing time. I will definitely be back!
We loved our visit to Shy Wolf Sanctuary. We were able to interact with Tien and some of the other wolves today. They are truly amazing animals. My favorite part was when all the wolves would howl together. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgable. It was a great experience. I will definitely recommend touring the sanctuary to all my friends and hope to come back to volunteer.
We had an excellent visit to the Wolf center. It was well worth the early morning drive over from West Palm Beach. The visit was very educational and it was fantastic to interact with the wolves. What a great way to spend a morning.
A what wonderful, exciting and very interesting visit. I wish you all the success in the future!
We enjoyed it very much. We talked about having our grandchildren visit, but felt it was a little too long for them. Maybe for young children a shorter presentation might be a possibility.
