| FOXY MOXIE | |
We were contacted in the beginning of 2009 about possibly taking a fox and wolves from a roadside zoo in Indiana. It was a place that was already in trouble with too many animals and poor conditions. The USDA was already involved in the situation as well. We were advised there were 8 adult wolves and 7 puppies just born. Seven adults and the seven pups were kept in a 16x24’ enclosure together with one lone male wolfdog by himself in a corn crib. Shy Wolf agreed to take the fox and also helped by arranging for the spay and neuter of the seven adult wolves to be left. Additionally, we obtained the health certificates necessary to get 15 large cats moved out of the facility and off to other rescues.Moxie was originally named Dante’ and the owner of the facility didn’t even know her gender. Her companion had died and they didn’t look at the animal closely enough to ascertain that it was the male who had passed. |

Moxie rode in a small crate in the front of the car while the mother wolf, seven pups, and lone male wolfdog rode in the back…luggage was relegated to an outside rack. All of the wolves and wolfdogs were rehomed to other reputable facilities. After arriving at Shy Wolf Sanctuary, Moxie was renamed and treated for severe anemia most likely due to fleas. She required frequent bathing and even transfusions. She is a silver tipped red fox, man-made for her luxurious coat. Moxie’s age is unknown but we do know she loves her eggs and recently had an Eagle Scout candidate remodel her habitat, creating a hammock and platform from which she can watch the goings-on at the sanctuary. |
