CHARLEY |
Charley is
about 2yo, male, neutered, UTD on vaccines and ready for adoption. We first met Charley when he was known as Bear. We got a call from a guy in Naples that had rescued this wolfdog via a friend but his older lab wasn't accepting the dog. |
| We spoke with him about separating the two dogs until we could get a home approved and offered to eval and photograph "Bear" for the online adoptables album. He rolled up in a crate in the back of a pickup. Our first vision of him was a very skinny dog that was terrified and had defecated all over the crate & truck. He was people friendly, however, and even was good with the kids who were there working that day with the boy scout troop. We took pictures, posted them and that was it. | |

Less than a week later we were told about a possible "red wolf" or "coydog" that was in Collier County's shelter and even posted on their website. As soon as we saw the photo we knew it was "Bear" and contacted the shelter. They were willing to release to rescue for a minimal fee (included neuter & vaccines) but we needed a place for him to go because SWS was over-full. An urgent plea was sent out as we could not pull him without having an adoption for him. A young lady in NC said she wanted to adopt him. Reference & home checks were done. The yard was smaller than we would like and the fence was shorter, but they said they could raise the fence if necessary. |

He was to be a house dog with two other dogs (one a wolfdog) and go for long walks. She renamed him Charley after her favorite character in a kids movie. Charley survived the trip up there, even though he doesn't like traveling much, and settled into the house fine. He did a little counter surfing but other than that was very well behaved. She had made him his own collar and pillow and already had a tag with his name and phone number. We had reservations about the yard after we saw it but had hopes that the walks & modifications would work. About 3 months later we got a call that they had been having problems with him "jumping" the fence. This is a BIG TALL boy and he could probably walk over a lot of fences! He had supposedly even jumped a 7' fence. We arranged to pick him up and bring him back where he is fostered at Deanna's house. He currently lives outside with Night Moon, but would love to find a home of his own again. He is very well behaved on leash, loves everyone, has no problems with big or little dogs (not cat tested, however), is good with older kids but would be too big & playful for little ones, and has learned to travel fairly well. He still hesitates slightly at getting into the vehicle and he drools…A LOT…while riding. Charley has shown no inclination to dig or jump a 6' privacy fence and would be adoptable either with Night Moon or as a companion to another dog. He would not be happy as an only dog as he loves to run and play. His one bad habit is that he gets so excited he has a tendancy to jump on you. We are working on behavior modifications for that but it is still a work in progress. Contact Deanna at admin@shywolfsanctuary.com or 239-290-9867 for more information.
